Day one: Bucharest
We will meet up at the International Airport of Bucharest, together with our special guide who will accompany us in our journey through the empire of Bacchus. The colourful traditions born in the Romanian cradle of vineyards will soon be lusciously uncovered to all of us.
Day two: Bucharest - Focsani ( 160 km )
After a delicious breakfast, we set out strolling through Bucharest. Coming up to the Parliament Palace, we experience the feeling of a bunch of children facing a huge fairy tale castle. The formerly so-called People’s House, the Parliament building is the second largest building in the world after the well-known Pentagon. We admire the Patriarchy Church, built in 1657, following closely the architectural pattern of the Curtea de Arges Monastery, then we take a stop in Piata Revolutiei (The Revolution Square), the place where the Romanian people claimed their freedom back in 1989. All aboard! As we get to the city of Focsani, we head for the first wine cellar on our travelling agenda: Odobesti. A place famous worldwide for the exclusive charm of the vineyards bathed in the golden sunshine, for its distinguished naturalness, its refined bouquet and the deep well-kept secrets of wine-making, reaching back a long way into Romanian history. Our next stop: Panciu, a wine region renowned especially for its excellent sparkling wine, which we relish during an official special program of wine-tasting.
Day three: Focsani - Husi - Bucium - Iasi ( 200 km )
The Moldavian capital, Iasi, awaits us. But we won’t miss the vineyards of Husi and Bucium, heavy with clusters of grapes. Here is the cradle of a variety of pure and delicious wines, with flavourful, fruitty and appetizing bouquets. We are at the very heart of this divine wineland. After a glass or two, people become more light-hearted, and inclined to story-telling...Iasi, the city over the seven hills, lures us with its enchanting views, praised at large by many Romanian poets. We accommodate ourselves, then we begin sightseeing the green Moldavian capital.
Day four: Iasi - Cotnari - Piatra Neamt ( 150 km )
Here comes the most famous of all Moldavian vineyards: Cotnari, as old as half a millennium. Glorified by poets and chroniclers, the wine of Cotnari is the pride of the former Principality of Moldavia ever since the glorious times of Stephen-the-Great, the bravest Romanian ruler of all times. “I dare consider it more distinguished and more savoury than other European wines, Tokay included”, used to say the scholarly Prince Dimitrie Cantemir. Following a several centuries-old tradition, the wines produced in this region respect their old exceptional quality even today and keep on getting awarded golden medals in international competitions. It’s time we had a refined tasting, discovering the delicacy and richness of the Cotnari bouquet.
Day five: Piatra Neamt - Sighisoara ( 250 km )
We leave the Moldavian region, taking away with us the scent of its wines, only to discover... the Transylvanian taste. We are met by the Clock Tower in the medieval city of Sighisoara, and, thrilled, we pass by the house in which the legendary Dracula was born. It’s time we quenched our thirst again...We can admire the mild light of the sunset which wraps up the vineyards of Jidvei and taste the wine and the sparkling wine, unmistakable in body and aroma; we praise them as we should, in a merry-making mood, accompanied by traditional chords of violins.
Day six: Sighisoara - Bucharest ( 276 km )
At the heart of the mountains, the city of Brasov greets us with its rugged beauty. The Black Church, the largest and most impressive gothic building in Romania, awaits us with its richness of architecture and wonderful works of art. Extremely rare Oriental carpets, with an unconceivable richness of colour and texture adorn the interior walls of the church and are a delightful sight to our eyes. On our way back to the capital, the last wine temptation, Valea Calugareasca, opens up before our eyes, as part of the vast vineyard of Dealu-Mare, as old as the Geto-Dacians, and well-known in the entire world for its healthy and savoury red wines. In the days of yore, men used to tap the wine barrels right in the open road, and loudly cry with joy for the whole village to hear. Exercising somewhat more restraint then them, we will simply go down into the wine cellar.
Day seven: Bucharest Departure
Our souls are at peace, our tastes deeply enriched, our fresh memories joyous. We have plenty of stories to tell the folks at home. Cheers!
